Now living in war-torn Spain with her mother and stepfather, a general in Wellington’s army, she is bemused when she meets Major Lord Mark Adair. He seems to understand her so well, and encourages her artistic ambitions. But why can’t he see that a beautiful condesa who has charmed him and the rest of the regiment is not worthy of his attentions? Sophia has to leave army life behind and travel back to England before she and Lord Mark finally recognize their true connection.
