Kitāb al-murakkabāt

by Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman

Kitabul Murakkabat was initially compiled in order to suffice the requirement of syllabi of undergraduate courses of Unani medicine. However, it was also taken up well by the physicians and scholars of Unani medicine on account of its simplicity, enormous degree of authenticity and a very comprehensive selection of the drugs. It is a collection of the compound drugs of Unani medicine that have been selected from the caboodle of the drugs described in scores of pharmacopoeia of Arabic, Persian and Urdu languages. The non pharmacopoeal and proprietary preparations have not been included in this book so as to ensure the uniformity and quality standard of the drugs and also to make their preparation easy for the students, practitioners and the manufacturers of Unani medicine. It has described vividly the name, basis of nomenclature (wajhe tasmia), constituents, chief ingredient, method of preparation, actions, therapeutic uses, supportive drugs (badreqa) mode of application, and possible side effects of each compound drug. The description of drugs has been arranged in alphabetic order but it covers almost all dosage forms that are used to ameliorate the diseases of different organs and classified body systems. The beauty of the book lies in its lucid, concise but comprehensive description of the drugs that gives a very clear understanding of the pharmacological and therapeutic profile of the drugs of common use. It serves as a good guide for the students to learn the theory and practices of compound drugs on one hand and as a handbook for common practitioners, pharmacists and the manufacturers of Unani medicine on the other. It contains about 300 compound drugs which have been selected on the basis of their common therapeutic application, easy availability of their ingredients and simple method of processing and formulating, to give a suitable dosage form. Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman during his chairmanship of the Department of Ilmul Advia envisaged a plan to prepare the teaching materials and text books of Ilmul Advia (Unani pharmacology) for the students of Unani medicine. Kitabul murakkabat is one important publication of this series. This is one of the recommended text books for imparting effective teaching of Murakkabat wa Saidla in different UG and PG colleges of Unani Tib and Pharmacy in India and Pakistan. Three editions of this book have been published so far from India, while two publishing houses of Pakistan have published its reprint from Pakistan.
