When Carolyn joined her archaeologist father in Mexico, she found herself immediately in conflict with Don Carlos, who owned the valley where her father was searching for a Zapotec city. Don Carlos thought she was "a typical product of the permissive society" and Carolyn let him know that "I am not one of your peons". It seemed an inauspicious beginning to their relationship.
